A neighbor friend of mine was telling me they have some holstien babies that they can't sell for the life of them. I was looking for a baby (or two) to help drink the goats milk but couldn't find any. Come to find out, some farmers are butchering the babies rather than feed them and only get $10.00 for em. So.... maybe I'll have me a lil calf soon.... ;D

Yeah, like filling the freezer! I wish I could find some of those for only $10.00! Around here, they go for anywhere from $50.00 to $150.00 depending on demand.

Lannie, the beef breeds cost much more than $10.00 here to. For some reason Holstiens bottomed out up here. They make ok meat though, I've had my share from the dairy farms in the past.

Kaza, LOL! A beef breed calf here runs a minimum of $250 (usually $300 and up). I was talking about the excess dairy Holstein bull calves. There's a guy who buys them up and then sells them. As much as I'd like to graft on a little Angus calf for beef, it's going to be Holstein in our freezer. There's a possibility I can get a Holstein calf or two from the little dairy we get our raw milk from, but those will cost more. I'd rather pay more, though, to get one that had already had its colostrum and I know it's healthy. But I don't have to worry about that until next year. This year, it will just be Bandit's own calf, so I can see how much she's going to produce. Then next time I'll try putting an extra one or two on her.
This place drives me crazy. We're surrounded by grass, and yet finding someone that sells grass hay is really a trick. Everyone here raises Angus and Hereford beef cattle, but finding local beef that a normal person could afford is impossible. At the "local" butcher shop, if you want local beef, it's $30.00 a POUND! The garbage they ship in frozen on a truck from somewhere else is only $6 - $8 a pound. That's why I have to raise a beef. I'm craving red meat and I can't afford to buy it! LOL!

I know, sucks doesn't it? I don't know how he can charge that much and still sleep at night. He's got to be selling to tourists... of course the $30.00 a pound stuff was good steaks, but we couldn't even afford the hamburger! That was something like $8 or $9 a pound, I can't remember. I was in shock. I was actually thinking of having you FedEx me one of those calves. You could stuff one into a large box, couldn't ya? Tape it up real good? Poke a couple of air holes? ~Lannie
