I'm so happy I could , I finally placed the order and got a confimation that they should have all of my selected breeds available for the week of June 16th hatch. They should arrive in AR on June 18th! I ordered: 12 Barred Rocks Pullets 12 New Hampshire Pullets 8 Buff Orpington Pullets 12 Araucauna's Straight Run 10 Black Australorps Straight Run That's right, my small 25 chick order ended up turning into a 54 chick order. Pictures will be regularly posted. This has been the longest period I've been without poultry(4 yrs) so getting these chicks is a real happy occasion for me.

Oh, I forgot to say I ordered them from Welp Hatchery. The online order form didn't seem to be working with my satellite connection so I called it in. The order taker said they'll put in a few extras in case of any deaths-so far I've never had any die in transit so I may end up with 57+ !! ;D

I'm so happy for you, and can't wait for pictures! I really like your selection, and all of them are such beautiful birds (only a chicken lover can see the beauty, lol).
If you plan on canning chicken meat, remember to season it up too! The last five years I have been doing that, and it makes it so nice to just grab a jar and be able to add some mayo and slap it on the bread in a hurry. Our favorites are adding garlic, onion and chipotle seasoning in different jars.
(ok, maybe that was rude of me to talk about beautiful chickens and eating them at the same time....sorry!)

Don't worry about it Deb, that's why I got some breeds in straight run-extra roosters make great homegrown chicken dinners. I'm going to order 25 or more slow grow broilers later on-they're not the hybrid, all they do is sit and eat Cornish Rock birds but they are a very meaty chicken that will actually go out and act like a chicken. If my figures on growth are accurate, getting them about the end of July will be perfect for fall butchering. Thanks for the tip on seasoning before canning; I always just did them with salt & pepper. Oh, did you know that Aracauna/Americauna's taste like quail ? I read that on one of the poultry websites. I like quail but they're so tiny and expensive-now I'll have a good substitute.

I've only had quail twice, and I can't remember if it had a distinct taste. A little moister then chicken meat if I remember right. I can't tell the different between our araucanas and the other chicken breeds we eat though....all taste like chicken. I had always just canned meat plain until I helped a friend can who was a much better canner then I...her kids pulled out a jar of chicken and mashed it up and started eating it on crackers while we worked. When they asked if I wanted one, I ate it and it was such a nice garlic flavor and she told me how she cans them with the seasoning in them before hand. One of those lightbulb moments that made you say "duh." lol Been doing it ever since with my chicken, turkeys. I really think chickens are the ultimate farm food...what else gives you eggs and meat, easy to butcher, easy to keep. Plus they are affordable to buy!

It gets even better! I mentioned that I love muscovy ducks and how they eat ticks. Buddy said, " Don't buy any, just get some eggs and we'll incubate them here". Bob has a couple of huge, commercial incubators. So I'm on the lookout for muscovy duck eggs now. I am excited, so much is happening all at the same time. ;D

Woohoo!! Your family of animals just keeps expanding! You do know what is going to happen don't you? You are going to start looking for duck eggs and besides those eggs you are going to run into goose eggs, turkey eggs, emu eggs, ostrich eggs....how will you ever say no to all those new animals?!

Does a baby raccoon count? Buddy brought home an orphaned baby raccoon last night. I've been feeding that little bugger every 3-4 hrs. I'm on my way to town to pick up KMR and a puppy/kitten bottle and nipple. I've been feeding him 50/50 evaporated milk & water with a dosing syringe. He's a loud little fella but darn he's cute. I'll get some pics maybe tomorrow.
