I only bought two.....I'm trying them out.....see---its not exactly allowed to have chickens here so I figure if I say they are just pets, and keep them in a chicken tractor most won't even know we have them. Wish I could have more!

I love the Barred Rocks, but then I like all chickens. Those little fuzz balls are so cute. With just two they probably will become pets. Just ask Lannie, she made pets out a lot of hers and she has a bunch! ;D So how does your hound doggie like the chicks??

Hound dog is curious, and when she sees me holding one she does the begging like she does when she thinks she's getting a treat. Needless to say, she's not gonna be let loose anywhere near chickens!

LOL, Kathy, I make pets out of anything I can feed! They all have me trained SO well! I have to say, though, that the roosters know their names, Mama hen thinks her name is Mama now, the Chicklets at least look at me when I say "Chicklets!" and Bridget comes running no matter what I say. But she's spoiled rotten. And that's only the chickens. Let's not even get started on the rest of the critters! Nickie, I thought originally I only wanted 4 hens. I thought that would be plenty to provide eggs for the two of us, and it wouldn't cost much to feed them, etc. etc. etc. Now I have 19 chickens and 4 guineas, and I want MORE! Especially the guineas. We started out with 10 and 5 of them went "missing" over two years (prolly somebody's lunch) then a couple weeks ago one of the three remaining roosters got hit by a car, stupid bird. So I have two hens and two roosters left. They do a number on the ticks around here in the summer, so I'm hoping one or both of those hens will SOMEDAY (exasperated sigh) decide to sit on that HUGE PILE of almost 50 eggs they've laid out in the orchard. With only the two of them, they've been working on it for over a month, but they're still not sitting. Stupid birds. OK, guineas are stupid, and they're very loud, so you don't want them, but they're great bug eaters and I just wish I had 50 more of them. ~Lannie

Lannie, I guess they will likely be pets LOL! I am really liking them. I used to raise parakeets, doves, finchs and 'teils when I was younger and loved it. Its nice having birds again, even if they are more of the utilitarian type of birds lol

I love birds, too. I always wanted house birds, but I've always had cats and dogs, so I didn't think it was safe. I did babysit a couple of cockatiels for a few months once and they were pretty neat. One thing about chickens is that they're a LOT tougher than most "house birds." And my cats and dogs are asceered of 'em! LOL! So, have you named them yet? ~Lannie

ok, I have RIR's now too...I couldn't help myself. Besides, one of the BR is turning out to be a Roo I think and I don't want the hen to get lonely when he goes off to camp.

Aw Nickie- You do know when the roo goes off to camp that is going to leave 3 chickens, and when you have 3, one always gets left out of the buddy/buddy relationship between the other two. You best go get more!!

Lannie... I used to raise cockatiels and had indoor dogs/cats. they were all taught to get along together... it worked. Kaza For SOME dogs, maybe. We had birds when we still had Sasha, our goldie. When we were around, she knew better then to pester the birds. But one night while I was at work, DH fell asleep without putting our talking male breeder away in his cage. Lets put it this way, there was hardly a feather left when i got home and I was NOT happy with DH about it. The femal who'd been sitting on eggs went crazy, smashed her eggs and plucked all her feathers. So even if you THINK your dog is trust worthy, in the end they are still just dogs. I know the dog I have now can NEVER be trusted with small animals....maybe even larger live stock too. Its in her nature to chase and hunt and it's very strong in her.

I'll agree with you on that Nicki. I wouldn't trust Jade as far as I can throw her with a bird or small animal. When I raised cockatiels, every critter I had was raised to get along with everything else... or they didn't stay long.
