I did so much research into this a few years ago.... but my brain is pretty much Swiss cheese... Food is too expensive, the economy is fragile, they're putting nasty things in what we can afford ... I WANNA FARM!!! So, what are your favorite sites or searches or resources for the total beginner? I also had a few really simple questions that I don't even know where to start looking for answers to... How many acres of garden do you need to feed a family? Approx how much space per person? What do you wish you would have known BEFORE you purchased your homestead? What adjustments to your plans for self-sufficiency have you had to make?

I did alot of research about these kind of things when DH was getting ready to retire. I seriously considered moving to many places. I finally decided to move about 30 miles away instead of cross country.
If you possibly can one of the first things I would do when I get my land is to put trees or large shrubs all around your border. Get them started growing. That way no matter what the neighbors do ..you won't have to see it! Also start fruit trees and berry bushes asap. I would also fence it in if I could afford it. We put that farm fencing all around except for in most of the front we put a pretty homemade wood fence. Why? Because it will keep out other folks animals, keep yours in, and remind everyone that the property is owned by someone and is private property.
We have 6 acres. We have had cows and pigs before. No more than 2 at a time. We have plenty of room for chickens and a few goats and a pond. Our garden is about half an acre and it has produced quite a bit. I think an acre would be enough to supply all the veggies 2 people would need in a year.
For privacy I would have preferred more land but realistically we couldn't afford or care for more.
Good luck lovephoenix!
