Yep, it is a real problem if you own animals.....I found that out while I have been sick with pneumonia! My mini stallion stands all of 26 inches tall....and he was not standing when I checked him.
In fact, his back end was not working at all and he was shaking all over. I called the vet!
Well, the vet checked him out and said (after taking some tests) that he was another victim of 'possum disease'...it hits equine with a usually fatal whallop. It is a parasite that stricks the nervous system of animals....and is carried by a host of possums or coons.....which seem to be everywhere.
Now the shocker....it can also be contracted by humans! Some vets disagree, but the fact is that people can get this and any other parasite if the conditions are right.
So, my little stallion had a slim to none chance of living.....so I called around to get some help in digging a grave for the little feller before the rains hit again. He was down and looked 'dead' most of the time....but yesterday morning, I looked out my north window and through the dense fog, I seen something that looked like my little black stallion up and moving! I thought that I had seen a ghost for sure, but he was up and even nickered at me when I went out to see him! He is still very weak and not stable at moving around, but he is up and eating and seems to be very happy to see me. So, there is still hope that he might beat this disease.
Now if I can just get over this pneumonia without hacking my lungs out....of course, like my bf said, there is still an 'empty grave' out there in the pasture.....
( No, honestly, he is a great bf.)
