I don't know what I need or if this is it or not to cut the fabric for basic quilts. I want a template that I can put down on my fabric that will cut even strips as well as triangles. This one looks like what I need but I don't know how you get triangles out of it. Can any of you real seamstresses help me out & give me your opinion-would buying separate templates be a better choice for a newbie? . June Taylor Template

I use something similar but it's more a long rectangle. I have 3 of various sizes. And you can always cut a square and then go across the corners to make the triangle.
That large square could be used, but I find those square ones are best for me to use to square up a finished square.

Yep....what Angie said. I use a 6 1/2 by 15 inch clear plastic ruler to rotary cut strips and squares....then use the cutting guides on the ruler to cut my diagonal cuts to make diamonds or triangles. I use a square ruler like the one shown, to square my blocks up....the 12 1/2 inch square isn't quite long enough to cut out strips easily, so it is much more useful to "square" things up after you have pieced them. You can use it to make individual squares though..and cut on the diagonal to make triangles...OR you can use it to make squares....mark a pencil line from point to point on the square...put two squares together right sides facing...and then sew 1/4 inch away from the diagonal pencil mark on both sides....cut on the line...and walla...you have two "squares" made out of triangles sewn together at the base...or the long side of the triangle.
