I took a cutting of some mint I found growing wild & was wondering what type it was. It is a little lighter then most mints & has small leaves. It doesn't really taste like spearmint or peppermint. Those are the only types I know of .I can't post pics unfortunately.

I have never grown mint so I can't help you there. I have always heard that mint can get out of control because it grows so good. It is best grown with boundaries unless you want a huge supply.

There's a whole lot of mint varieties; spearmint, peppermint, apple mint, pineapple mint, on & on. Here's a neat site to check out some of the varieties. www.mountainvalleygrowers.com/mint.htm Momo is right, mint will definitely take over if left to run. I planted some in the orchard area in AR, I bet it's going to smell good this year.

When we still lived in Redmond, I had a patch of mint, all nicely contained with barriers down 2 feet into the ground. But it got out. When it spread into the surrounding grassy area, Rich would just mow it with the grass. The smell was to DIE for!
I can't get mint to grow here no matter how hard I try. Even though it's rated hardy to Zone 4, the weather is just too brutal I guess. I lose it every year. I really miss my rosemary, thymes, and mints.

Plant it in the wash yard, makes hanging and taking down clothes a pleasure.

After my experience planting mint in a flower bed (NEVER do that again).... I grow my mint in containers only. But I do like the idea of planting it where the clothsline is.... hrmmmm...

I must be a glutton for punishment because I just planted 3 kinds of mint-spearmint, peppermint & one just labeled mint that smells & tastes different than the other two! This year they're all in containers on my deck but I wouldn't be surprised if at night it tries to make a break for it.
