I have a fairly good patch of asparagus but decided to add to it. I ordered 20 roots from Jung's and they arrived yesterday afternoon while I was at work. I worked the later shift this week so I couldn't plant them yesterday. It's raining and is supposed to continue for the remainder of the weekend. My question is, how long will the roots 'keep' without being planted? It's supposed to be clear during the week, so if I have to allow 2 - 3 days for the ground to dry enough to be workable will that be OK? I wet the roots last night, but now I'm wondering if I should have done that. Maybe being dry helps preserve them and keep them dormant? What do ya'll think? Will a few more days hurt? Should the roots be wet or dry?

I've never planted asparagus but I keep the roots of other bare root stock damp with wet newspaper if I can't plant for a few days. I came up with 0 when I tried finding something online about dry vs moist. I guess in the perfect world of the internet nobody ever has a delay due to weather. Good Luck, I'm trying to figure out who's garden I'm going to visit next spring; yours or Momo's.

The roots should be okay for a few days. Have you ever seen them when they are in stores like Lowe's? Sometimes they sprout through the bags.
We just bought seeds for the first time this year. I have always bought the roots before but I decided I wanted a huge crop instead of just 20 or so plants. I hope they do ok.

They should be ok for a few days. But, usually when placed have bundles of the roots for sale, they are dry. I wouldn't water them anymore till you plant them.

Thanks, all. I'll check on the roots from time to time to make sure they don't start to go bad and let them dry if they start to look funky. Seems like our weather makes a point of being nice during the week and getting wet/chilly on the weekends. Normally I'd have gotten these roots planted one evening, but it was my week to work the later shift. I'll get it done ASAP so it'll probably work out. Thanks for the help.
