I have heard it is great for killing roaches but not to use it around kids or pets in case they ingest it.

Yes, I've heard some serious warning about Borax. No kiddies or pets here, so I sprinkled Borax in a few strategic places.
Also use a couple of drops of strong-smelling essential oils on rags to repel critters. Tea tree oil, oil of oregano, and such.
I've planted rosemary and lavender close to the house to help, too.

I need a way to deter ladybugs now! They started their annual deluge 2 days ago. Yuck!!!
