Bob, just look at all of these false starts as some weird & tortuous form of cardiac exercise! Your heart starts to race when you think today is the day and then relaxes when you find out it's not till tomorrow. Hang in there- hopefully tomorrow you'll have a brooder full of little peepers!! ;D

Oy! They HAVE to come in tomorrow, they won't leave them on a truck for longer than that. Waiting patiently.....

some of them are very small and only weigh 1/3rd what the big ones do. If I was a serious breeder I would cull them right now. but I am not so I wount.
they all got their drinks and now are feeding well. there are two that are sleeping ,I hope they are just resting and are not feeling bad
If I end up with 20 little pullets I will be happy
I dont have a top for the tank yet. how long before they are flying out do you recin

At least a week, if that's a rubbermaid type stock tank . The sides look about 6" tall from the pics-am I close?? I used some rabbit wire/hardware cloth to make the top for my brooder just be careful working with it though-that stuff bites if you get hung up in it. What are you going to use for your chick brooder-a solid top or some sort of wire?

it is two feet from the wood shavings to the top of the tank
I was planning on useing 2x4 wire over the top. if they fly up they couldnt get out
they are in the wood shop. the room is always about 80 degrees and they have a red 250 watt bulb on them. they are not bunching up or staying away from the light so the temp must be good for them

I love them ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
they are eating and drinking fine ,exept for two . one of which died an hour ago and one that is not too perky
I redipped both twice. all three, theone that was dead when I got them and the two since that isn t doing well are the very small ones. no big suprize ,I wonder if they are from smaller eggs? wouldnt they have to be?

I would think they'd be from smaller eggs. I'm sorry you lost 2 with a possible third but for small chicks that's not too bad. They are so cute-reading about them brings back such nice memories. If you've got that much room from the top of the brooder-you should have 2+ weeks. They'll hop up on the feeders and waterers first-then jettison themselves towards the 'sky' which in this case is the wide open spaces of your wood shop!!

With emu if we can get them past the first couple of weeks they are usually ok. What about with chickens?

If they're shipped, usually the first few days. If they're hatched at home then usually you know something's wrong within 24 hrs. The difference is shipping stress will cull the very weak during the trip and then any that are "reduced" because of the trip will take a little longer in declining.
Bob - your babies are ADORABLE!!! Makes me want more! My special ones STILL aren't in yet! Oh well...
