I have had chicks shipped here with no problems. I am kind of over run right now. I had 70 come from Hoover's Hatchery in Iowa. I ordered 25 Marans from Ideal. They were supposed to come on the 26th & didn't show up. By the 28th they still were not here so I called & told them to send me a refund figuring they were lost in the mail. My feed store had 40 Rhode Island Reds so I stopped in & bought those. Well, here the Marans showed up on Saturday, the 29th. They didn't bother to call & tell me they were shipping them at a later date. So now I have almost 140 chicks!!! Ideal had sent 8 extra with my order. If anyone is near me next spring, do stop in for eggs! ;D

there is a small animal and poultry sale here in town this comming saterday.
I think I will take the extera roosters and sell them.
they are all about the same size I thought about keeping the roosters with the biggest combs, thinking that means they are maturing faster
how would you all cull them?
can you tell I know very little about chickens?
I think I will take the two with the yellow legs as well. one is a pullet and one is a rooster, sell them as a pair

Maran Hens are normally the Dark ones. The Roosters have the light feathering. Would say it is 90% correct most times. For culling...I would take a look at this web site. Just depends on what you are looking to do with your flock. americanmaransclub.com/index.html

Yes, I am nuts! When I get these into the chicken house with the other layers, I'll order 75-100 to butcher. We ate the last one out of the freezer last week. I have some canned, but I need chicken in the freezer for grilling & frying. I usually sell a few too. That basically gives me mine for free.

well I got them sold I sold a pair a trio and a pen of 14 roosters the pair went for 7.00 the trio for 11.00 and the 14 roosters sold for 3.50 each I thought the 3.50 each for roosters was kinda high compaired to how the rest sold. I suspected the lady that bvought them didnt realise they were roosters instead of pullets so I ask her if she knew they were roosters and you should have seen her face so we ask them to no sale them and sell them again. that time they only brought 1.25 each not as much money but I slept good that night this leaves me 22 nice pullets and 4 nice roosters here at home.

That was nice of you to do Bob. I had called Ideal on the Friday after my chicks were due to let them know I had not received them. The gal said she would issue a refund. Well, they came on Saturday so I called & left a message. I talked to someone on Tuesday & told her they had arrived & I only lost 1. Well, I got a check from them in the mail a couple of days ago refunding me the whole amount. I called them again yesterday & told them I had gotten the chicks & I just would not feel right about taking the refund for something I had. I mailed the check back & I feel good that I did that. Sometimes being honest really makes you sleep well.

Bob, you're not nuts, heck I got the warm fuzzies when I found my first zucchini! I love the color of those eggs, since I'd never seen the really dark ones I think these are pretty dang impressive! Congratulations. Now the next big moment is a double yolker!

Those are beautiful chickens! The look a little like a dark barred rock but those eggs certainly identify them! I'm so glad your eggs are getting darker since I know you were really hoping for the dark eggs. The size is increasing too!
